Why skip prices vary
A large part of a skip’s price is what it costs to get rid of the waste: the charges at the transfer station or landfill site, and Landfill Tax on whatever can’t be recycled. Those costs differ from one area to the next, and so does the distance the lorry has to travel.
Each local skip company sets its own prices, so the number of companies in an area matters too. On our price sheet the cheapest areas for a builders skip are Wolverhampton, Walsall, Telford, and the dearest are Plymouth, Dorchester, Truro.
The size matters less than you’d think. Going from a 4 yard to a 6 yard usually adds less than the price of a second skip, so if you’re unsure, size up rather than risk running out of space.
How to pay less for a skip
- 1Pick the right sizeOne skip the right size is cheaper than two small ones, or a swap. The skip size calculator gives you a size in two questions.
- 2Keep it off the roadA skip on your drive needs no permit, which saves £54 to £105 in most areas.
- 3Fill it wellBreak down furniture, flatten boxes and put heavy items in first, so you’re not paying to move empty space.
- 4Keep banned items outFridges, tyres, paint and gas bottles mean extra charges or a skip left behind. The council or the tip usually takes them for less.
- 5Consider a man and vanFor a few bulky items or a small clear-out, a man and van can cost less than a skip and loads it for you.
Skip hire price questions
- How much is a skip?
- Most people pay £120 to £155 for a 2 yard mini, £265 to £330 for a 6 yard builders skip and £375 to £445 for a 12 yard maxi, ex VAT. Enter your postcode for your area’s guide prices.
- What is the cheapest skip?
- A 2 yard mini, from £95 in the cheapest areas. If the job is bigger than a garden tidy, a 4 yard midi costs less than ordering a second mini.
- Do skip prices include VAT?
- Our guide prices don’t. Add 20%: a £290 builders skip is about £348 with VAT. Always check whether a quote is ex or inc VAT.
- Is the permit included in the skip price?
- No. A permit is only needed if the skip goes on the road, and it’s added to the price. Most councils charge £54 to £105.
- How long do I get the skip for?
- Usually one to two weeks, depending on the company. Longer hire is normally charged by the day or week, and a skip on the road also needs its permit renewed.
- Why is skip hire cheaper in some areas?
- Mostly because disposal costs, travel distances and the number of local skip companies differ. On our price sheet a 6 yard skip runs from ${gbp(cheapest[0].price)} in ${cheapest[0].name} to ${gbp(dearest[0].price)} in ${dearest[0].name}.
