8 yard skip hire
Guide prices start from £230, and most of England pays £275 to £360, ex VAT. An 8 yard skip holds 60 to 80 bin bags. In many areas it costs about the same as a 6 yard builders skip, so it’s good value when your waste is bulky rather than heavy.

Is an 8 yard skip right for you?
An 8 yard skip is for jobs with more volume than weight: a renovation across several rooms, clearing a house before a sale, or a big garden overhaul with branches and old fencing.
In much of the country its guide price sits close to a 6 yard’s, and in some areas it’s the same or lower. If your waste is mostly light and bulky, that makes the 8 yard the better buy.
If your waste is mostly soil and rubble, choose a 6 yard instead. Many companies limit how much heavy waste an 8 yard can take, and a skip you can’t fill isn’t a saving.

What fits in an 8 yard skip
- A multi-room renovation
- A house clear-out with furniture
- Mixed building waste and general rubbish
- A large landscaping job
- Old fencing, sheds and garden furniture
- The contents of a garage and loft together
Soil, rubble and weight
Some companies take soil and rubble in an 8 yard skip, filled level. Many limit it, or ask that heavy waste only fills part of the skip, because a full 8 yard of rubble is more than the lorry can lift. Check when you book.
The safest plan for a job with both: put the rubble in a 6 yard skip and the light waste in a second skip or a man and van, or ask about a mixed load when you call.
Drive or road?
At about 3.7 metres long, an 8 yard skip is too big for most drives, so it usually goes on the road. Expect to need a permit.
The skip company applies to your council for it. Most councils charge £54 to £105 for two weeks, and some need a few working days to issue it, so book early.
8 yard or another size?
Pick by the kind of waste: a 6 yard for heavy, an 8 yard for mixed or bulky, a 12 yard for large amounts of light waste only.
| Size | Typical price | Bin bags | Heavy waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 yard builders | £290 | 50 to 60 | The usual choice for heavy waste. Most companies cap heavy loads at this size. |
| 8 yard large | £300 | 60 to 80 | Some companies take heavy waste in an 8 yard, filled level. Many limit it, so ask first. |
| 12 yard maxi | £395 | 100 to 120 | Not for soil or rubble. The weight would be over the lorry’s limit long before it’s full. |
