How skip hire works
You choose a size, a licensed local skip company drops the skip off, and you fill it at your own pace, usually over one to two weeks. When it’s full, it’s collected and taken to a transfer station, where most of the waste is sorted and recycled.
If the skip fits on your drive or private land, that’s all there is to it. If it has to go on the road, the skip company applies to the council for a permit first, which can add a few days and a fee to the hire.
Most home jobs need a 4 or 6 yard skip. Smaller jobs suit a 2 yard mini, and house clearances or big renovations suit an 8 or 12 yard skip.

What affects the price
- The size of the skip
- Where you live: tipping charges and competition vary by area
- Heavy waste like soil and rubble, which costs more to dispose of
- A council permit if the skip goes on the road
- How long you keep it
- Awkward items such as mattresses or tyres, which carry a charge
Permit fees depend on your council
A skip on the road needs a council permit, and the fee varies more than most people expect. Your skip company applies for it and adds it to the bill.
