How RoRo skip hire works

A RoRo is a long, open container that a hook-lift lorry winches on and off its back. It’s delivered empty, you fill it over days or weeks, and the lorry swaps it for an empty one or takes it away.

Most RoRos have a door at one end, so you can walk or barrow waste straight in rather than lifting it over the side. That makes them far quicker to load than a stack of 8 yard skips.

They suit jobs with a steady flow of bulky waste: strip-outs, shopfits, factory clear-outs, demolition timber and large house clearances.

RoRo sizes

SizeRoughly (L × W × H)EquivalentBest for
20 yard6.1m × 2.4m × 1.5mAbout 2 to 3 builders skipsSite waste, strip-outs, shopfits
40 yard6.1m × 2.4m × 2.4mAbout 5 to 6 builders skipsBulky, light waste in volume

Dimensions are typical and vary between companies. 30 and 35 yard containers are also common.

Space and access

A hook-lift lorry needs more room than a skip lorry. Before you book, check:

  • About 15 metres of straight, level ground for the lorry and container
  • Firm hardstanding that can take a lorry of up to 32 tonnes
  • Clear height of around 7 metres where the container is lifted
  • No overhead cables, branches or canopies over the drop point
  • A clear way in and out for a large lorry
  • A permit if the container goes on the road, where councils allow it

What goes in a RoRo

Yes

  • Timber, packaging and cardboard
  • Strip-out waste, ceilings and partitions
  • Shop and office fittings
  • Furniture and bulky items
  • Green waste in volume
  • Light mixed building waste

No

  • Large amounts of soil, rubble or concrete
  • Asbestos
  • Plasterboard mixed with other waste
  • Hazardous waste, liquids and gas bottles
  • Tyres and fridges without arranging first

Heavy waste fills the weight limit long before the container is full. For soil and rubble, a grab lorry or several 6 yard skips usually works out cheaper.

What affects the price

  • Container size
  • Waste type, because mixed and heavy waste costs more to process
  • Tonnage, often charged over an included weight
  • How long you keep it before each swap
  • How many swaps the job needs
  • Distance from the depot and the local waste site

RoRo skip hire questions

What does RoRo stand for?
Roll-on roll-off. The lorry winches the container on and off with a hook, rather than lifting it on chains like a skip lorry.
How much space does a RoRo need?
Allow about 15 metres of straight, level ground, firm enough for a heavy lorry, with clear height of around 7 metres above it.
Can a RoRo go on the road?
Some councils allow it with a permit, many don’t because of the size. Most RoRos go on a site, yard or car park.
Can I put soil and rubble in a RoRo?
Only small amounts. Heavy waste hits the weight limit long before the container is full. A grab lorry usually suits it better.
How long can I keep a RoRo?
It depends on the company and the job. Sites often keep one on a rolling swap, exchanged whenever it’s full.
Is a RoRo cheaper than several skips?
For large volumes of light waste, usually. One collection replaces several, and the end door makes it quicker to load.
