Wait and load skip hire
The lorry arrives, waits while you fill the skip, then takes it straight away. Because the skip never stays on the road, you usually don’t need a permit, and nobody else can add their rubbish to it.

When wait and load is the best choice
- Streets with no room for a skip, or where parking is tight
- Flats and terraces with no drive

- When you’re worried about other people filling your skip
- Clear-outs where everything is ready to go on the day
- Saving the permit fee on a short job
Wait and load or a normal skip?
| Wait and load | Normal skip hire | |
|---|---|---|
| Permit | Usually not needed | Needed if on the road |
| Loading time | About an hour | Up to two weeks |
| Who loads | You, while the lorry waits | You, at your own pace |
| Fly-tipping into it | Not possible | Can happen on the road |
| Best for | Waste that’s ready today | Work that produces waste over days |
What wait and load costs
Often about the same as a normal hire of the same size, sometimes a little more because the lorry and driver wait with you. You save the permit fee if the skip would otherwise go on the road.
Go over the agreed loading time and you may pay extra, usually per 15 or 30 minutes. Have helpers ready so you don’t run over.
Wait and load questions
- Do I need a permit for wait and load?
- Usually not, because the skip is never left on the road. Check with the skip company if the lorry has to stop somewhere unusual.
- How long does the lorry wait?
- Usually up to about an hour, depending on the company. Longer waits can be arranged, often at an extra cost.
- What sizes are available for wait and load?
- Most companies offer it on the common sizes, from 4 to 12 yards. Ask which sizes they can do in your area.
- Is wait and load cheaper than a man and van?
- Often, because you do the loading. A man and van costs more but the team does all the lifting.
