Is a 6 yard skip right for you?
If you’ve seen a skip outside a house that’s having work done, it was probably a 6 yard. It’s the size builders order by default, because it takes a serious amount of heavy waste and is still small enough for a lorry to lift when full.
It suits jobs that go beyond one room: a knock-through, an extension, a full kitchen and bathroom together, or taking up a patio or drive. It holds 50 to 60 bin bags, about half as much again as a 4 yard midi.
For light, bulky waste in large amounts, such as a house clearance, an 8 yard or 12 yard gives you more space for not much more money. For a single room, a 4 yard is usually enough and easier to place.

What fits in a 6 yard skip
- Rubble and bricks from an extension or knock-through
- A full kitchen and bathroom with packaging
- Timber, plasterboard and insulation
- A large garden clearance
- A patio or a section of driveway
- An old garage or outbuilding taken down
Soil, rubble and weight
This is the skip for heavy waste. Soil, rubble, concrete, bricks and hardcore can all go in, filled level with the top. Most skip companies won’t let you fill anything bigger with heavy waste, because the weight would be more than the lorry can lift.
A full 6 yard of rubble is heavy enough that an overfill really matters. Keep the load level, don’t add boards to raise the sides, and if you have more rubble than fits, book a swap or a grab lorry rather than piling it up.
Drive or road?
At around 3 metres long and 1.5 metres wide, a 6 yard skip fits on a standard drive but can be tight on a small one. Measure before you book, and leave room for the lorry to line up and for the arm to swing overhead.
If it won’t fit, it goes on the road with a council permit, which the skip company applies for. Most councils charge £54 to £105, and on a busy road the council may ask for lights or cones.
6 yard or another size?
The 6 yard is the line for heavy waste: smaller sizes take less of it, and bigger sizes are mainly for light waste.
| Size | Typical price | Bin bags | Heavy waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 yard midi | £225 | 35 to 45 | Good for soil, rubble and hardcore, filled level. |
| 6 yard builders | £290 | 50 to 60 | The usual choice for heavy waste. Most companies cap heavy loads at this size. |
| 8 yard large | £300 | 60 to 80 | Some companies take heavy waste in an 8 yard, filled level. Many limit it, so ask first. |
