Is a 4 yard skip right for you?
A 4 yard midi sits between the 2 yard mini and the 6 yard builders skip. It takes the units, worktops and packaging from a typical kitchen, or a bathroom suite and its tiles, with room left for the odds and ends that turn up on the last day.
Its real advantage is size on the ground. At about 2.1 metres long it fits on most drives, so you usually avoid a road permit, and it costs noticeably less than a builders skip. If the job is a single room, it’s nearly always enough.
Choose a 6 yard instead when the job runs to several rooms, or when you’re taking out a wall, a patio or a lot of plasterboard. A second skip costs more than going up a size.

What fits in a 4 yard skip
- A kitchen or bathroom refit
- Flooring from one or two rooms
- A medium garden clearance
- Furniture from a couple of rooms
- Old carpets and underlay from a small house
- A shed taken down and its contents
Soil, rubble and weight
A 4 yard skip is a good size for heavy waste. Soil, rubble, bricks and hardcore can fill it, as long as you keep the load level with the top. Level with the top, a 4 yard of rubble already weighs several tonnes.
Don’t pile heavy waste above the sides. An overfilled skip can’t be collected, and the driver may ask you to take some out before lifting it.
Drive or road?
Most 4 yard skips go on a drive, which needs no permit. Allow about 3.1 by 2.5 metres of level ground, with room for the lorry to back up and space overhead for the arm.
If it has to go on the road, footpath or verge, the skip company applies to your council for a permit. Most councils charge £54 to £105, and it’s added to your price.
4 yard or another size?
A mini suits one small job, a midi most single-room jobs, and a builders skip anything bigger or heavier.
| Size | Typical price | Bin bags | Heavy waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 yard mini | £135 | 25 to 35 | Fine for soil and rubble, filled level. |
| 4 yard midi | £225 | 35 to 45 | Good for soil, rubble and hardcore, filled level. |
| 6 yard builders | £290 | 50 to 60 | The usual choice for heavy waste. Most companies cap heavy loads at this size. |
