Getting a skip in Rotherham

In Rotherham town centre, every Westgate Riverside home has private parking and Millfold Rise's three-storey homes have allocated spaces. If your space is private and big enough, the skip sits there with no road permit, and a 4 yard midi is the easier fit for a single bay. The town centre scheme part pedestrianises Market Street and Domine Lane. On Corporation Street, traffic other than buses can't head uphill towards Ship Hill, so the lorry comes in from the top of Main Street by turning left onto Westgate.

In East Herringthorpe, the semis on Farnworth Road and the homes on Conway Crescent each come with two parking spaces, so your skip can often stay off the road. A 6 yard builders skip suits a patio or rubble job there. Parkgate has the most terraced housing in Rawmarsh West, and Oakhill's flats have on-street parking, so your skip there goes on the road and the skip company gets the permit. Car Hill tip in Greasbrough takes a few bags of DIY rubble, but not unlimited amounts, so a bigger job still needs a skip.

In Letwell, a well preserved farming village in the Green Belt, the conservation area's character is meant to be kept, so a 2 yard mini or 4 yard midi sits more discreetly. Ask the skip company where yours can stand before you book. For regular hedge and lawn cuttings, Rotherham's garden waste subscription at £53 a year for 20 collections beats a skip. Hire one for a one-off garden clearance instead.

Other ways to get rid of it in Rotherham

For one or two items, the council is often cheaper than a skip. Here’s how they compare.

Nobody wants fly-tipping in Rotherham. Whoever takes your waste, make sure they’re a licensed waste carrier. The skip companies on this site all are.

Questions

Do I need a permit for a skip in Rotherham?
Only if it goes on the road or pavement. A skip on your drive needs none. On the road, the skip company applies to Rotherham Council at least 3 working days ahead, and the permit costs £28 for up to 14 days.
Can a skip lorry reach Corporation Street in Rotherham town centre?
It can, though uphill access is limited. Traffic other than buses can't travel up towards Ship Hill, so the lorry turns left onto Westgate from the top of Main Street. Going downhill is open to all traffic.
Is the Car Hill tip in S61 better than a skip for rubble bags?
For a few bags, usually yes. Greasbrough's Car Hill site is open seven days a week and takes some building waste, but the council won't accept unlimited amounts. Vans need an authorised permit, and a car trailer can have a bed of up to 1.8 metres. A full patio or wall goes in a 6 yard builders skip.
Can I have a skip outside a flat in Oakhill, Rotherham?
You can, though it will usually sit on the road. Oakhill's flats have on-street parking, so the skip company applies for the council permit at least 3 working days ahead. It lasts up to 14 days, and after that a new permit is needed if the skip stays.
Will a skip fit at a Farnworth Road semi in East Herringthorpe?
Usually it will. Each semi there has two parking spaces, so a 4 yard midi or 6 yard builders can sit off the road with no permit needed. The same goes for the homes on Conway Crescent, also in East Herringthorpe.
