Rules in Rochdale
- On the road, the skip company applies for Rochdale Council's permit and tells you what it costs.
- A skip on the carriageway needs at least four traffic cones on the approach side.
- In darkness or bad weather, flashing amber lamps go on each corner, with one between each cone.
- Rochdale Council may ask for a damage deposit if a skip sits on the footway or a grass verge.
- If you need the skip longer, the council requires a further permit application.
Getting a skip in Rochdale
Rochdale's older terraces are spread across several areas. Wardleworth, Hamer, Belfield and Clover Hall have late Victorian terraces, and Hey Brook and the curve of Entwisle Road have late Victorian and Edwardian ones. If your terrace has no drive, the skip sits on the road and the skip company applies for Rochdale Council's permit. On the carriageway the council wants at least four cones on the approach side. A 4 yard midi takes up less of the street than an 8 yard large.
In Syke, northeast of the town centre, Syke Road has red brick terraces and the conservation area keeps its weavers' cottages. Dewhirst Road has a larger estate built between the wars. Rochdale also has resident parking on parts of Church Stile, Chancel Place, Moore Street, Oak Street and St Chad's Close, and near the railway station on parts of Ann Street, Henry Street and Maclure Road. If your skip goes on one of these streets, tell the skip company when you book so it can plan the placement.
Rochdale Town Centre Conservation Area covers the core of the town, bounded by St Marys Gate, Sparrow Hill and Kenion Street and Drake Street. Three-storey terraces line both sides of Drake Street. If you're working on one with no space off the road, the skip goes on the street under Rochdale Council's permit. For a car boot of DIY waste, Chichester Street Recycling Centre takes it without booking, so you may not need a skip. For heavy rubble, book a 6 yard builders skip or smaller.

Questions
- Does a skip in Rochdale need a road permit?
- Only on the road or pavement. A skip on your drive or private land needs none. On the highway, the skip company applies to Rochdale Council and tells you the cost. The council can set conditions on siting, skip size, lighting and when the skip is removed.
- Can a skip go on Church Stile in Rochdale's resident parking area?
- Only with Rochdale Council's permission if it sits on the road, and the skip company applies for it. The council can set conditions on where it goes. The resident parking scheme covers parts of Church Stile, Chancel Place, Moore Street, Oak Street and St Chad's Close, so mention it when you book.
- Is Chichester Street tip better than a skip for small OL16 jobs?
- For a car boot of DIY waste it often is. Chichester Street Recycling Centre takes household and DIY waste, and you don't need to book. Vans, pick-ups and twin-axle trailers need a permit, limited to 18 visits a year, and a 2 metre height restriction applies. Trade waste isn't accepted.
- What suits a Rochdale sofa and two chairs, skip or council?
- The council collection usually suits that best. Rochdale Council collects up to three large items per booking, and you can book up to three weeks ahead. Any extra items cost £8 each, so a skip makes more sense once you're clearing a whole room.
- Can I have a skip in Syke Conservation Area, Rochdale?
- You can, with the usual permit rules. Syke keeps weavers' cottages with long runs of upper windows, and Syke Road has red brick terraces. Without a drive, the skip goes on the road under Rochdale Council's permit, and a 4 yard midi takes less of the street.
