Rules in Reading

  • Reading Borough Council's licence costs £99.50 for the initial application and up to 2 weeks.
  • Each additional week on the road adds a further weekly fee to the licence.
  • A skip on the highway for longer than 4 weeks needs a renewal application.
  • Skips aren't permitted on certain Reading town centre roads, though special arrangements may be possible.
  • Each skip needs at least three cones on its approach side and a red lamp at each corner overnight.

Getting a skip in Reading

Reading has controlled parking zones where parking is for permit holders only. Tell the skip company when you book if your street is in one. Along Oxford Road, Victorian terraces stand on small plots with parking on the street. A skip outside one of them sits on the road and needs the council licence. There, a 4 yard midi takes up less kerb than an 8 yard large. Eldon Street's nineteenth century terraces are in the Eldon Square Conservation Area. Check for space off the road before you pick a larger size.

In the Christchurch Conservation Area, a number of the Victorian and Edwardian homes have no parking of their own, so a skip there often needs the road licence. Redlands has a similar mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced homes with mixed parking. If yours has a drive, a skip on it needs no licence. For a few bags of rubble or soil, Smallmead on Island Road takes up to 100 litres free per visit if you book, so you may not need a skip at all. For a full room or garden clear, a 6 yard builders skip takes heavy waste.

Reading town centre has restricted pedestrian zones where vehicle access is limited to set hours. Skips aren't allowed on certain town centre roads, though special arrangements may be possible. Friar Street, Minster Street and Broad Street are all in the special vehicle permit zones. If you're working on one of them, ask the skip company to check the road and the access hours before you book.

For one or two items, the council is often cheaper than a skip. Here’s how they compare.

Nobody wants fly-tipping in Reading. Whoever takes your waste, make sure they’re a licensed waste carrier. The skip companies on this site all are.

By law you’re responsible for your waste even after it’s collected. If it’s dumped and traced back to you, you can be fined.

Questions

Do I need a skip permit in Reading, RG1 or RG30?
Only if it sits on the road or pavement. On your drive you need nothing. On the street, Reading Borough Council's licence costs £99.50 for up to 2 weeks, with a weekly fee after that, and the skip company applies online.
Is Smallmead in RG2 enough for a bathroom refit in Reading RG31?
Often it is for a small one. Smallmead takes up to 100 litres of rubble, soil or plasterboard free per visit, or one bath-sized sanitary item, if you book. The free allowance covers four visits in four weeks, so a bigger refit is easier in a 4 yard midi.
Is Reading's bulky collection better than a skip in RG1 or RG4?
For up to three items, usually. Reading Council collects 1, 2 or 3 bulky items for £60, with no licence or space needed. Once you're clearing a room or more, a 2 yard mini or 4 yard midi takes far more.
Can my skip go on Christchurch Road in Reading's Christchurch Conservation Area?
It can, with the council licence. A number of homes there have no parking of their own, so the road is often the only spot. Christchurch Road is mostly larger houses on larger plots, so check for a drive first, as a skip there needs no licence.
How long does a skip permit last in Reading, RG2 or RG4?
Up to 2 weeks on the first licence at £99.50. Each extra week adds a further fee, and past 4 weeks on the highway the skip company must make a renewal application to Reading Borough Council.
