Rules in Nottingham

  • Nottingham City Council's road permit for a skip costs £71.50 and lasts up to 14 days.
  • Only the skip company can apply for the permit, not members of the public.
  • The permit is applied for online, and Via checks the skip's proposed location first.
  • A skip found on the road without a permit brings a retrospective charge and must be removed or newly permitted.
  • Deliveries into the Nottingham City Centre Clear Zone must avoid 10 am to 4.30 pm.

Getting a skip in Nottingham

In Lenton, Radford and Hyson Green, Nottingham's Victorian terraces have on-street parking only. Your skip goes on the road there, so the skip company applies for the permit before delivery. A 4 yard midi takes up less of the street than a larger skip. Sherwood and Mapperley have semis and terraces built between the wars, so check whether you have a drive before you book. A skip on a drive needs no permit. The post-war estates of Bulwell, Bilborough and Bestwood call for the same check.

Nottingham's Arboretum, north of the city centre, is a conservation area. North Sherwood Street has linear terraced housing, and Walter Street's terraces step down the hill. Check for any space off the street there, or the skip goes on the road under the permit. In The Park, 355 houses sit in spacious garden plots off tree-lined roads, and parking is mixed, so some homes may have room for a skip off the road. On Southey Street in Forest Grove, houses are set well back from the road frontage, so ask whether a 4 yard midi fits in front.

Timing matters in the centre. Vehicles are kept out of the Nottingham City Centre Clear Zone between 10 am and 4.30 pm, and out of Bulwell Town Centre between 10 am and 4 pm, Monday to Saturday. On Forman Street, vehicles may only enter between 6 am and 10 am. Ask the skip company to plan delivery and collection around those times. For a few bags of rubble, tiles or plaster, the Lenton tip on Redfield Road takes DIY waste from city residents, so a small job may not need a skip.

Questions

Do I need a permit for a skip in Lenton, Nottingham NG7?
Usually, since the Victorian terraces there have on-street parking only. A skip on the road needs Nottingham City Council's £71.50 permit, lasting up to 14 days. Only the skip company can apply, so it handles the application when you book.
When can a skip reach Nottingham's Clear Zone, Forman Street or Bulwell?
Only outside 10 am to 4.30 pm, when vehicles are prohibited in the Nottingham City Centre Clear Zone. Forman Street is tighter, open to vehicles only from 6 am to 10 am. In Bulwell Town Centre, vehicles are barred from 10 am to 4 pm, Monday to Saturday.
Is Lenton tip in NG7 better than a Nottingham skip for bathroom rubble?
For a small job it can be. Lenton Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Redfield Road, NG7, takes DIY waste including rubble, plaster, tiles and bathroom suites. You must live in Nottingham City and bring waste from your own home, and trade waste isn't accepted.
Is a skip worth it for a wardrobe in Nottingham, NG5 or NG8?
Probably not on their own. Nottingham's bulky waste collection takes up to six non-upholstered items, such as bed frames, wardrobes and tables, for £26. A skip makes more sense once the furniture comes with a room's worth of other waste.
How much is a 6 yard builders skip in Lenton, Nottingham NG7?
A 6 yard builders skip costs £255, and sizes start at £120 for a 2 yard mini. It's the largest size to use for soil, rubble or hardcore. For just a few bags, the Lenton tip on Redfield Road is in NG7 too.
