Rules in Liverpool

  • Liverpool City Council's permit costs £44 per skip and lasts a maximum of 7 days.
  • Apply at least two working days ahead, though the council will try to handle applications on the day.
  • For a skip staying longer than 7 days, a new permit is needed when the first expires.
  • In the city centre, a road skip must be removed on the day it's placed unless it's enclosed and lockable.
  • Your skip company applies online for the road permit, so you don't deal with the council yourself.

Getting a skip in Liverpool

In Liverpool's inner core, most homes are pre-1919 terraces, and Wavertree has one of the city's largest concentrations of them. The Welsh Streets and Voelas Street in Toxteth are Victorian terraces too. If your terrace has no drive, your skip goes on the road under Liverpool City Council's permit, one for each skip. A 4 yard midi takes less of the road outside a terrace than an 8 yard large.

In Anfield and Everton, the Victorian terraces are tightly packed, so a 2 yard mini or 4 yard midi leaves more room on the street. The Football Match Residents Parking Zones around Everton and Liverpool football clubs are for resident permit holders only, 10am to midnight between August and June. Tell the skip company if you live inside one. In the city centre, all on-street parking is controlled. A road skip there must be removed on the day it's placed unless it's an enclosed lockable skip.

Further out, around the Dovecot, Fazakerley and Norris Green estates, you'll find social housing and expansive semi-detached plots. If your plot has a drive, the skip can sit there with no permit needed. For up to five bulky items, Liverpool City Council's collection costs £0 for residents and beats a skip for a sofa and a wardrobe. For a full house clear-out, an 8 yard large gives you more room.

Other ways to get rid of it in Liverpool

For one or two items, the council is often cheaper than a skip. Here’s how they compare.

Questions

Will a skip outside my Liverpool house need a council permit?
Only if it sits on the road or pavement. Liverpool City Council is the highway authority for every public road and footway in the city, and charges £44 per skip for up to 7 days. A skip on your drive needs no permit.
How long can a skip stay in Liverpool city centre?
Only for the day it's placed. A city centre skip on the highway must be removed that day unless it's an enclosed lockable skip. All on-street parking there is controlled, and waiting restrictions apply outside the designated bays.
How many items does Liverpool's bulky collection take before a skip makes sense?
Up to five bulky items per property, plus up to five small electricals and five bags of textiles, for £0. It's for Liverpool City Council residents only, on the day the crew is next in your area. For more than that, a skip holds the rest.
Can I get a skip in a Liverpool football match parking zone?
Check the zone first. Parking in the Football Match Residents Parking Zones around Everton and Liverpool football clubs is for resident permit holders only, 10am to midnight from 1 August to 30 June. A road skip there still needs the council's £44 permit, and a 4 yard midi suits Anfield's tightly packed terraces.
How much should I budget for a skip in Liverpool's L postcodes?
Prices run from £100 for a 2 yard mini to £400 for a 12 yard maxi, with a 6 yard builders at £250 for heavy rubble. On the road, add Liverpool City Council's £44 permit for each skip.
