Rules in Bristol
- Bristol City Council's skip permit costs £90 and lasts one calendar month.
- Apply at least 5 working days before the skip needs to go on the road.
- For a hire longer than a month, a fresh permit application is needed.
- A skip on the road without a permit means a retrospective permit for every month it lacked one.
- Old City deliveries to Corn Street and Small Street run 5am to 11am, Monday to Saturday.
Getting a skip in Bristol
In BS3, the Victorian and early twentieth century terraces of Bedminster, Southville, Windmill Hill and Ashton Gate often have no garage or driveway. Your skip will usually go on the road there, under the council permit. A 4 yard midi takes up less of the kerb outside a terrace. Southville and Bedminster East also sit in residents' parking schemes, where parking is restricted. Easton and St George have Victorian and Edwardian terraces too, so check for space off the street before you book.
Central Bristol is a Controlled Parking Zone, and every street has some parking restriction at some times. In the Old City, Corn Street, Small Street and Clare Street are closed to vehicles except for loading between 5am and 11am, Monday to Saturday. Bell Lane, John Street and Broad Street between Newmarket Avenue and Bell Lane allow loading from midnight to 11am. Outside those hours the barriers are closed. The delivery and collection of your skip need to fit those windows.
Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym have detached houses with wider roads and driveways. Your skip can sit on the drive there with no permit, and an 8 yard large suits a bigger clearout. Raglan Road, Wolseley Road and Shadwell Road, in the Gloucester Road area, are terraced streets, so check for off-street space before you book. For a few bags of rubble, the St Philips tip in BS2 takes 100 litres free per booked visit, which beats a skip. For up to 3 bulky items, the council collection at £27 is the better buy. A mixed clearout of bags and furniture still suits a skip.

Nobody wants fly-tipping in Bristol. Whoever takes your waste, make sure they’re a licensed waste carrier. The skip companies on this site all are.
By law you’re responsible for your waste even after it’s collected. If it’s dumped and traced back to you, you can be fined.

Questions
- Do I need a permit for a skip outside my Bristol house?
- Only if it sits on the road or pavement. Bristol City Council's permit costs £90 for a calendar month, and applications are online. Apply at least 5 working days before the skip goes out. A skip on your drive needs none.
- When can a skip lorry reach Corn Street in Bristol's Old City?
- Between 5am and 11am, Monday to Saturday, for loading and deliveries. Corn Street, Clare Street, Small Street and Marsh Street are closed to vehicles at other times. The barriers then only open for authorised vehicles, using number plate recognition.
- How much rubble can I take free to St Philips in BS2?
- Up to 100 litres a visit, in two 50 litre bags, at a booked slot. The free allowance covers one load a week and 4 visits in 28 days. Extra bags are charged, and vans and trailers need a permit.
- What does Bristol City Council charge to collect a sofa and bed?
- £27 covers up to 3 items, so a sofa and a bed fit one booking. For a few large pieces that is simpler than a skip. A skip makes more sense once you're also clearing bags of mixed waste.
- What size skip fits a Southville terrace in BS3?
- A 4 yard midi usually suits. Many BS3 terraces have no garage or driveway, so the skip goes on the road under a permit costing £90 for a calendar month. Southville is also a residents' parking scheme area, where parking is restricted.
