Getting a skip in Bradford

In the Attock Park area of Barkerend, the Victorian stone terraces between Leeds Road and Barkerend Road include back-to-backs, and parking is on the street. A skip there goes on the road, so you'll need the council licence, and a 4 yard midi leaves more room for parked cars. Apsley Crescent in Manningham is a row of Victorian terraced houses, so check whether you have space off the road before you book. On Moorside Road in Eccleshill, narrow terraced cottages and older houses pinch the road at the village core, so tell the skip company exactly where it should go.

Inside Bradford city centre's pedestrian zone, you can't drive or stop unless an exception applies. Loading is allowed from 4.30pm to 10.30am, and bollards may block vehicles between 10.30am and 4.30pm. On the Heritage Streets, including Ivegate, Kirkgate and Darley Street, vehicle access has to be requested, and the council allows it into the pedestrianised area only in exceptional circumstances. Talk to the skip company early if your job is in the centre.

For a bag or two of rubble, Bradford's recycling centres take soil, rubble and tiles free, up to two 50 litre bags per household once a week. For three bulky items, the council's collection at £30 is less hassle than a skip. Bigger jobs, such as a kitchen strip-out or a garden clearance, need a skip, and soil or hardcore should go in a 6 yard builders or smaller.

Questions

Do I need a permit for a skip in Bradford?
Only if it sits on the road or pavement. A skip on your drive needs nothing. On the road, Bradford Council's licence is £48 for 14 working days, and the skip company applies at least a day before delivery.
Can a skip go on Ivegate or Kirkgate in Bradford city centre?
Only with council permission. Ivegate and Kirkgate are Heritage Streets, where vehicle access has to be requested, and access to the pedestrianised area is allowed only in exceptional circumstances. Bollards may block vehicles from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Is a skip worth it for a few bags of rubble in Bradford?
Usually not. Bradford's recycling centres take DIY waste such as soil, rubble and tiles free, limited to one visit a week per household with two 50 litre bags at most. When the job outgrows that, a 2 yard mini from £120 is the smallest skip.
Should I book Bradford's bulky waste collection or a skip for furniture?
For three items, the collection is simpler. Bradford Council takes 3 bulky items for £30, with the date given when you book and pay, subject to availability. A whole-house clearance suits a skip better.
Where does a skip go at a Barkerend back-to-back in Bradford?
On the road, because the Victorian stone terraces around Attock Park in Barkerend, including the back-to-backs, have on-street parking. You'll need Bradford Council's licence at £48, and a 2 yard mini or 4 yard midi takes the least kerb space.
